PostSubject: Rock Creek Park   Rock Creek Park I_icon_minitimeThu Jan 31, 2013 11:03 pm

The wind rustles the leafless trees and moonlight reflects off the patches of snow thinly blanketing the floor of the circular clearing. The ethereal aurora of fey light is gone and the echos of jubilant sprites as they sailed through the air out of captivity have ceased to reverberate through the empty woods. Thomas sighs thoughtfully as he looks around the clearing for any personal affects left behind by the clearing’s occupant.

An ogre, Pike had said it was, that had been holding all the Little Folk captive. Standing here now, in its sanctum, with his battered group of ragtag misfits Thomas can’t help but thank God the ogre hadn’t been here when they arrived. He glances at Reah, beautiful, though bruised, her thick red hair dampened by perspiration, and a deep gash in her shoulder from the hound’s venomous fangs. Standing nearby the hulking, half-clothed form of Dwight the bear-man, and the shadowing figure of Zarba both harbor similar wounds. Only Peter appears to be mostly unscathed as he looks nervously around and clutches his gun. They are all fortunate not to have been plunged into another fight immediately after their close brush with the faerie hellhounds, but then again, the ogre could return at any moment, so they weren’t exactly in the clear just yet.

“Guys, we should hurry,” Thomas intimates in cautious whisper just loud enough for everyone to hear. “The thing that had the Little Folk locked up here will be back, and it’s sure to be none too happy with us. Help me search the area for anything belonging to the ogre that could be used to link spells back to it.”

Dwight stood there, wearing the trench coat Thomas had lent him, breathing heavily. He glared at Thomas "Don't think this is over between us. You seem to have a soft spot for the blood drinkers, and when this is all over you and I will be having a very long conversation." As he spoke Dwight's voice became a low growl and his fists clenched as he struggled to keep from decking the wizard before him. There simply wasn't time for this, Thomas was right at least in one thing - the ogre could return at any moment, and they were all bruised and battered from the fight with the fae hounds.

As Thomas began to search the area, Dwight scented at the air. His sense of smell wasn't nearly as good as when he was in bear form, but it was still better than human, and he was hoping to find some traces of where the ogre may have gone.

Dwight wandered the small clearing searching for a scent to follow, but the the ogre's foul stench crossed back and forth over the entire area, and he simply couldn't find a trail to follow, it was all to jumbled. Maybe if I went back into my bear form I might be able to follow a trail.... He thought for a moment, and decided against it, hoping that Thomas might find something. The change back and forth could be exhausting if done to many times back to back, and he was betting he would need to save his energy for the final assault on the ogre.

He looked over at Thomas who was examining something on the ground. He hurried over and whispered,"what did you find Thomas?" Thomas was looking at a small shard of bone on the ground, maybe an inch long. It looked like it might be a finger bone, weathered and yellowed with age. Dwight leaned forward to pick it up and Thomas grabbed his wrist to stop him "wait! don't touch it! There's a magical aura around it of some sort!"

“Yes,” Thomas had replies to Dwight, “we definitely need to talk.” The bear man’s compulsion to attempt to rip the head off anything with fangs was beginning to get old, and it would really get them into trouble sooner or later if they didn’t do something about it. But, as usual, there was no time for that at the moment, so Thomas commences his search. After several moments a slight glow of mystic energy draws his attention to the small bone on the ground. He crouches over it and gazes at it, deliberating what to do next.

What it was from exactly, Thomas can’t be sure. It is humanoid, and human-sized, but did it come from a human or merely something human-shaped? Either way it is a gruesome artifact and Thomas shivers as a chill trickles down his spine and settles sickeningly in his gut. He tries to push back thoughts about how this bone came to be in this place, an ogre’s lair. Of course, the problem is, how it got here and where it got that aura of energy is the exact question Thomas needs to know the answer to right now. Obviously, by it’s weathered appearance it did not come from a recent victim, but has been kept for some time because of its usefulness. Perhaps a judicious use of the sight would shed some light on the true nature of this bone; but Thomas has a sinking feeling that he is not going to like what he sees. Bracing himself he opens his metaphysical “third eye”.

((Double parentheses means this part of the post is out of character: After describing what Thomas sees go ahead and roll for him to close The Sight, he won't keep it open any longer than he has to))

Thomas opens his third eye and gazes upon the bone. As he looks at the aged bone it grows less old and withered before him, and bone by bone the rest of a skeleton forms attached to it. Flesh begins form on the bones and although it feels like it takes hours to form, only seconds pass. A beautiful woman lays on the ground before him, perfectly formed, and without a single blemish. Her beauty almost hurts his mind, and her nudity is beyond distracting. Then suddenly her ankles and wrists are pinned down with metal shackles that seem to burn her flesh. In moments the skin touched by the manacles is burned down to the bone. She screams, and though he hears nothing, the psychic power behind the scream causes him to reel back.

((Thomas takes a mental stress hit in his first stress slot, and the sight remains open.))

Thomas continues to gaze at the bone, and the woman it reveals. Mesmerized by the tragedy of the woman's torture he is still unable to close down the sight and look away. He does notice however that there is a reflection of something in her eyes, but he can't seem to see what it is.

((Thomas takes a second hit to his mental stress in the second slot.))

There is definitely something reflecting in her eyes, a figure maybe? Thomas is still unable to make out any detail in the reflection.

((Thomas takes yet another mental stress hit, this time in slot 6 on the mental track. At this point Thomas is going to have to take at least a minor consequence or be taken out. Go ahead and post either way, and then I'll keep going.))

As the Sight reveals far more to Thomas than he had bargained for he struggles to maintain his composure and keep his mind focused on the task of deciphering the mystery of this bone and not get distracted by they beauty of the woman he sees or the gut-wrenching tragedy that this beautiful person has been reduced to the shabby bone lying on the ground in front of him.
His stomach turns and he swallows hard.
No, there is no time to think about that. He racks his brain as he studies the image for clues, trying to see if he can tell what manner of the creature the woman was, whether she was truly human or something else, and if something else, then what. Were there any physical or physiological traits that might have given her away? And what of those shackles, what had they been made of to affect such damage on someone’s skin? ((Roll Lore to do an assessment.))
Gazing at the poor tormented woman who’s bone lay before him is torture for Thomas and he is all too eager to be done with the task, so once he is fairly certain there is nothing more to be gained from continued exposure he begins to close the Third Eye, but finds the image not receding as expected. Suddenly he becomes aware that he is fixated on the image in front of him, unable to turn away or shut it out. He begins to feel dizzy, and then loses focus altogether. The young woman’s eyes just pull him in. All he can do is stare at them and the pain they reveal.
Thomas’s stomach turns upside down as the sight becomes just too much, and he feels his stomach empty itself ((Mild Mental Consequence = Traumatized)).

((Could Thomas get a Fate Point from all this trouble since it ties into his “Fae-blooded knight turned wizard” aspect? It is Thomas’ need, as a wizard with the heart of a knight, to investigate and try to solve magical problems that got him into this trouble, after all.))

((speaking of fate points, you may want to tag an aspect and use a fate point on your lore roll a +2 would be enough to bring you to +5 which would be a success on the lore roll.))

At this point you can't learn anything further without a successful lore roll. However on the upside Thomas has finally gained enough control to close down the sight if you want to - which I assume he does.

((edit - also in case you were unaware you do have a hit on your 4th mental slot. Which means you're pretty close to every mental stress hit being a consequence.))

The reflection in the woman's eyes is that of a massive ogre, who appears to be laughing and holding a stone dagger in the air about to plunge down into the woman's chest. Also, Thomas realizes that the woman is of the sidhe, hence the burning of her flesh where the iron shackles touch her. A moment later the image of her is gone as he closes down the sight, but a lingering image of a shallow grave seems to stand out in his mind. Thomas is reasonably sure that he can locate the grave with the proper tracking spell.

With a great effort of will Thomas is finally able to close down the Sight and the image of the suffering lady burned into his retinas slowly begins to fade, but not before his stomach lurches again. He gags and forces the burning stomach juices back down his throat. Then he realizes he is shaking uncontrollably. He tries to stand but finds he doesn’t have the strength and instead slowly sits down on the cold ground.
Thomas looks around at the other trying to regain his bearings in reality; hoping the faces of his companions in front of him will help to dull the face of the sidhe lady still replaying itself with intense detail through his visual cortex.
“I, uh,” he stammers. “Um, this bone… it’s from a sidhe; faerie nobility. She was tortured and killed by the ogre who inhabits this clearing. It shouldn’t be difficult to locate the rest of the woman’s remains for anyone who can do divination…”

Peter then chimes in, "Thomas let me see that bone for a second, I think I can use my divination to find the remains." Peter then takes the bone and places on the ground next to his snowglobe to begin preparation for divination. ((Roll lore check to see if the sidhe remains can be located))

FYI - for anyone lurking, this particular scene was finished out in our live game - The Ogre has been sworn to harm no one for a year and a day, and Dwight is sworn to not harm the ogre for the same. Also, a beatting was handed out to the ogre before he was willing to talk...
